Welcome to Boy Scout Troop 894! We are chartered by West Newton United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. We have a program for boys 11 through 17 designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster. Boys also may become Boy Scouts if they have earned the Arrow of Light Award or have completed the fifth grade.
Boy Scouting provides a series of surmountable obstacles and steps in overcoming them through the
advancement method. The Boy Scout plans his advancement and progresses at his own pace as he
meets each challenge. The Boy Scout is rewarded for each achievement, which helps him gain self-
confidence. The steps in the advancement system help a Boy Scout grow in self-reliance and
in the ability to help others.
Troop 894 has campouts almost every month. Past campouts themes have focused on hiking, advancements, wilderness survival, and orienteering. Mid-winter outings include indoor rock climbing lock-ins.
Each summer we attend a week-long summer camp. Traditionally, we spend every
other summer camp outside of council.
Merit badges are awards earned by youth members of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), based on activities within
an area of study by completing a list of periodically updated requirements. The purpose of the merit badge program
is to allow Scouts to examine subjects to determine if they would like to further pursue them as a career or a vocation.
